A Closer Look at IBM WebSphere Portal 8.0 – Out of the Box portlets

One of the great improvements in Portal 8.0 that doesn’t seem to be widely advertised is the following portlets:

  • Article portlet
  • List of Articles portlet
  • Rich Text portlet
  • Image portlet

As you’ve probably heard, the base WCM system is now included in all versions of WebSphere Portal.  Even though you cannot use WCM directly in the base Portal Server version, you have access to those 4 portlets I listed above. These portlets let you add content to your portal without the full WCM interface.

Let’s think back to the time that you are working on that customer demo under a tight deadline. You are scrambling, looking for a good way to show a list bookmarks or links. Guess what? It’s as easy as pie to do that with the Rich Text portlet. You can even go to your customer’s site and copy/paste a set of bookmarks. Plus, what if you want those nice images? In addition to the Rich Text portlet, the Image portlet will do the trick. Let’s watch this video to see how it’s done.

Last but not least, the List of Articles and Article portlets are automatically wired. Make it really easy to build that view/detail type of pages. Let’s watch this video for more details.

In summary, these portlets provide great tools to build a fantastic pages in a matter of minutes. Check it out and take advantage of it!
